UT cpos grope in dark as gangs strike
CHANDIGARH: The UT police seem clueless about means to tackle armed robber gangs that have begun operating in the city at will.
The fuel station heist in Sector 44 on Monday night is the second such armed gang related incident within a span of a month. And the similarities in modus operandi of the two gangs are striking.
Yet, the UT police are groping in the dark over the armed dacoits, who attempted to loot an ATM of the ICICI Bank in Manimajra on January 2 this year.
1x1 polls

A month ago it was a six-member gang that caught hold of the bank guard at gun point and attempted to loot the ATM.
On the watchman of the neighbouring SCO waking up, the gang also used the country-made revolver it had to shoot at him and injured him before escaping from the scene of the crime.
Here, the gang had come to the isolated ATM, away from the Chandigarh-Kalka Highway, discreetly and escaped under the cover of darkness. They carried a revolver and swords to threaten the guard at the bank.
Manimajra police, investigating the incident, are yet to make any headway in the case. "We are working on the case and since the gang seemed to be an amateur gang, the task has become more difficult. Hence the probe is moving at a snail's pace," said a police officer linked to the case.

In the latest incident too, the three-member gang used a pistol to threaten the petrol pump employees on the Vikas Marg National Highway far away from the residential areas of Sector 44.
Here too, the gang had brought a pistol and swords to threaten the employees before robbing them. The gang attacked the employees with swords before fleeing with Rs 5,000 cash. Only that, they were lucky to escape with the booty this time around.
With the police unable to bust the armed dacoits who attempted at the ICICI Bank ATM, it only seems that armed robbers are gaining confidence to strike and to hoodwink the police. The fuel station heist is only an indicator of things, unheard of in the city until a few days ago, to come.
